ABOUT THE BOX (1979 - 1980)
The Box is an inquiry into the mythological and ritualistic activities of captivated royalty. It is a Queen’s domain governed by compressed air and machinery triggered by a Controller and an “Assistant to the future”. Two large prawns are present: one is directly linked to the Queen and lays Eggs on command; the second Prawn produces cocktails. The Queen relies entirely on the Controller and the “Assistant to the future” for her production of eggs and only manages this delicate transmission by receiving cocktails from a machine sensitive to Carbon Dioxide which only the Controller is in a position to activate. The Box only existed as a performance and much of its quality relied on the exact execution and deterioration of the square dance which eventually opened up the possibility for its ultimate breakdown.
